Sunland Baobab Enduro Race 2007 - The Final.

Saturday 10 November saw the final round for The Big Baobab 2007 Enduro Race, a three series enduro relay race on the farm at SunLand Nurseries. It was a fantastic day and was once again a great success. Teams came from Polokwane, Louis Trichardt, Nelspruit and of course plenty of locals. The day was extremely hot and the muddy conditions also really put pressure on the riders. Fortunately there was a strong breeze and the damp ground, both of which attributed to less dust than usual. Once again there were no serious injuries and in all three enduro rounds the ambulance hasn’t left the farm once.

Quad Bike Bike

A total of 33 teams entered. There were 16 quad biking teams with 4 Ironman participants and 8 bike teams with 5 Ironman participants. The Ironmen do the 12 km track as many times as they can in the six hours.

The Quad Bike category was won by the ‘All Power Outlaws’ with 24 laps, in 6 hours. 2nd came ‘Troy Lee’, 3rd ‘VIP Racing’ and 4th came ‘Wild Cats’. 1st place in the Quad Ironman category went to Tertius Erasmus from Merensky High School.

Bike Quad Bike

The Bike category was won by team ‘Justice Department’ with 25 laps, 2nd came ‘Jou Ma’ and 3rd ‘Powerade Black’, 4th position went to the local boys the ‘Sleebok team’. Once again Carel Pretorius from Louis Trichardt won the Ironman on his bike.

We were very honoured to have Cornel De Villiers as a celebrity guest. Cornel is a multiple SA champ and Dakar winner and has also won the Roof of Africa.

Garmin wrist GPS Pit Bike Prize Giving

R15000’s worth of prizes was donated by our sponsors. All Power from Polokwane donated a pit bike valued at R5300 and a nail-biting lucky draw was had, every entrant having an equal opportunity to win. A helmet camera, Garmin wrist GPS, a trailtec computer, and a lot of bike kit and vouchers were also up for grabs.

The day was organized and run by Guy van Heerden, his love and enthusiasm of the sport is contagious and we are hoping to run another series next year.

Enduro relay a huge success!

Saturday 24 June saw the first of the Baobab Relay Enduro Series held at Sunland Baobab near Duiwelskloof. 21 teams entered this 6 hour event either as "IronMan" individuals (5 entries) or as teams of 3 and 4 riders. There were three categories namely 2 wheelers, quads and side-by-sides with 52 participants altogether.

The 6 hour event covered an 11 km track testing the riders' mettle with mud holes, technical rock crossings, tight burms and a chicken run. Each team carried a baton which had to be passed over to the next rider before he could continue. The teams that completed the most laps in 6 hours were the winners. This was tightly contested and a 'sudden death" lap was held to determine the final victors. The Powerade team won this and were the winners of the 2 wheel event. Second place went to team Fox and third was a tie between Polokwane Yamaha, Sleebok Team ,"Unlikely" team and Richards team. Quads was won by the Troy Lee team from LTT, second was the Coke Team (Tzaneen) and third place went to "The Riders" from Tzaneen. The Iron Man which was the individual event went to Carel Pretorius of LTT, second went to Nelius Human (Tzaneen) and third went Armand Brits of Tzaneen. There was only one entry for the side-by-side category and this went to the Ivory Tusk Team of Tzaneen who did extremely well completing 18 laps in the allotted time.

This was a great family event as there was always company in the pits and the spectator points were fantastic, a lot of the course being visible from the elevated "table top' on the pit area. The Coke Van kept the crowds entertained while hosts Heather and Doug van Heerden kept the food and drinks flowing. This is a wonderful family and spectator event and one that should not be missed, the next race being held on the 25th August and the final on the 10th November. So get your team (there is only room for 40 teams!) and families together and come and join in the fun at the Sunland Baobab!
